Data Pipeline

A data pipeline is the connected chain of steps that carries data from where it is produced to where it is consumed: ingest, validate, transform, store and serve, each stage handing clean, well-formed data to the next.

No jargon, no math

In plain words, what is it?

Think of a conveyor that never stops. Ingest takes events from apps, machines and forms, usually buffered in a queue so bursts do not get lost. Validate checks each record against rules; bad ones are quarantined, not silently passed on. Transform cleans, joins and reshapes what survives. Store writes it to a warehouse or lake, versioned and timestamped. Serve is the exit: dashboards, reports and AI features all read from that one consistent copy. Pipelines come in two rhythms: batch (nightly chunks) and streaming (record by record, seconds old). The failure mode is structural: one broken stage blocks everything downstream, and the cause is usually a silent change upstream, a new column nobody told you about. Good pipelines are monitored like production lines, because they are production lines.

§ 02How it worksFrom source events to dashboards and AI
  1. 01

Ingest. Events arrive from apps, machines and forms, buffered in a queue so bursts are not lost.

  2. 02

Validate. Each record is checked against rules; bad ones are quarantined, not passed on.

  3. 03

Transform. Surviving records are cleaned, joined and reshaped.

  4. 04

Store. Results are written to the warehouse or lake, versioned and timestamped.

  5. 05

Serve. Dashboards, reports and AI features read from that single consistent copy.
